Mam Tor and the Castleton Ridge – 26th February

Castleton – Peveril Castle – Limestone Way – Mam Tor – Hollins Cross – Lose Hill – Hope – Castleton

Distance: 9 miles

Liam Norcup’s account of the day:

After a couple of aborted attempts at getting out due to inclement weather, we managed to get out for the first training walk.

I have been entrusted with training folk and, with my major concern being scaring people off, I decided on a nice easy stroll around the village of Castleton. The plan was to meet at 9am and get straight off but you know how it is, there is always one, and we managed to get started at just before 10….

Another concern with holding myself out as someone who does a bit in the hills was getting the group lost and there would be nothing worse than failing to find the path out of the village! However; with the path safely found we climbed steadily. A few of the party were breathing like Darth Vader, but before long everyone got into their stride and we made good time.

After easily summiting Mam Tor we carried on along the ridge towards Lose Hill. On taking a short break for lunch, it became immediately apparent that wicking base layers are superfluous when you have got your Sunday best to hand…

After being educated in the works of Wagner and the undeniably interesting fact that there is, in fact, more than one funeral march, we descended and made our way back to Castleton. Having spotted a pub serving all day breakfasts on the way to grab some cigs, whilst waiting for the tardy classical music lover earlier that morning, I commented to Sarah that I would kill for an all day breakfast. The reply was astonishing: ‘how do you know they will still be serving it?’ On arrival at the pub I opted for Peroni and pork, both were a bit special.

All in all, a good first walk; time to up the ante a little…
